Wow, what a lineup! That kid is amazing, loved all the solos. What a treat. Please do share more of this kind of thing when you come across it!

Absolutely! And so glad to have a fellow traveler who likes the solos--hard to do that in 3-minute songs!

Does this band have a name? Was it a one-off thing? I'm pretty sure you turned me on to Lisa-X before, and shared a clip of her when she was younger. This video really blew me away. I just bought a new turntable and the first album I put on was Airto's Return to Forever album, from 1972. It's the same year that RTF put out their first album, even though Airto's record wasn't released until 1980.

Both the Billy Cobham and Jeff Beck albums were played by me as a young 20-something. Cobham is a monster drummer and I got to see him perform at Yoshi's in Oakland probably about 20 years ago. The drummer kid Rasta in the video especially blew me away. How does he have such chops at 11 years old? That doesn't seem possible. All of the musicians play with such joy and attentiveness.

Seeing videos like this gives me a bit of hope for the future (at least the future of music).

Thanks Steve for taking the time and for the bit of history. Interesting that you found these albums quite a bit after they had been a thing. I never saw Cobham live, though I saw Beck several times. Yes, Cobham has a unique sound--I don't think anyone combines finesse and power the way he does. Maybe Bill Bruford, but his groove is completely different.

The core band in this clip (guitar, bass, keys, drums) is the Jack Thammarat Band. Rasta is new to the lineup and is making a splash for obvious reasons. This lineup is "Laney L3", a tour sponsored by the amplifier company Laney, featuring Jack, Lisa and Alex. They played a few festivals and a short tour in Asia but it was probably a one-off thing. They all have day jobs with their own bands.

If it was a one-off concert, thank goodness it was videotaped for us all to witness! Yeah, the kids are learning and growing so fast. It will be interesting to hear how they develop as songwriters and composers of original music, vs. reinterpretations.

If you want a taste of Lisa's writing, here are two spotify links, to her two most recent EPs, with her band Koiai. She writes most of the music. I suspect you'll be impressed.
