Beginner’s Guide to Heavy Metal: A New Contributing Writer, and a List of Previous Articles
Reposted from "The Riff"
You may have seen some of the installments in our series (A) Beginner’s Guide to Heavy Metal. Great news: We have a new contributor, Zumbido Metal, joining the team. His first article is Part 10 of the series.
We began this series to demystify metal for people who are unfamiliar with it or perhaps even intimidated by it. Yes, metal is heavier and can be louder or more brutal than other styles of rock music, but it also offers works of great depth and beauty. Metal has a lot in common with classical music—the emphasis on composition, the premium placed on musicianship, the sometimes grandiose and epic themes, and the sheer variety of musical ideas.
There are many stereotypes about metal, some of them justified, but there is much more here than first meets the eye. That is what this series is all about. Several of our articles have been aimed at deconstructing the stereotypes. I am probably the team member with the least prior knowledge of metal, so working on this has been an eye-opening experience.
Zumbido Metal’s installment (Part 10) takes the proverbial bull by the horns. He focuses on the metal genre that many people find the most difficult or intimidating: Death Metal. I invite you to dive in.
